Waterguard – 1/2" Tall Drywall Protection and Support

WATERGUARD

Waterguard is a patented extrusion developed to hold drywall up off the floor preventing it from wicking moisture through the slab and eliminating water damage caused by rising damp and moisture routinely introduced thru building maintenance such as mopping, waxing, and shampooing of floors.  Waterguard is a lightweight, low cost way to ensure that gypsum drywall stays dry and mold free.

BACKGROUND

The most common method for constructing walls in the United States during the 20th and 21st centuries is stick frame construction made up of wood or metal studs with applications of gypsum wall board on each side. This assembly is by far the least expensive, most flexible, and most widely used method for almost any type construction whether residential, institutional, commercial, or educational.

THE PROBLEM

The problem is that gypsum wall panels are manufactured with a paper face on each side which is highly absorptive and when installed against the floor surface, may wick moisture through the slab and into the wall creating ideal conditions for the growth of mold.  Additionally, every time water is introduced to the floor surface, whether during construction or later while mopping and stripping floors or shampooing carpet, the problem is only compounded.  The US Gypsum Association and manufacturers of the wallboard all advise that the wallboard be installed with at least a 3/8” gap between it and the floor for these reasons.

Until now, building owners, architects, and contractors have worked to manage this risk by installing the gypsum wallboard with the lower edge raised approximately ½” above the floor.  This is harder than it sounds.  Wallboard weighs approximately 1-1/2 to 2 pounds per square foot so a sheet may weigh as much as 50-65 pounds.  While some contractors may attempt to install the board against the floor and later return to cut or route out the ½” gap, most prefer to use scraps of the wallboard as shims until the board is screwed into place. However, due to the weight of the board, these shims are not easily removed and may result in damage to the installed wallboard.  Quality control is often problematic.

Additionally, if the wallboard is installed as preferred, the 1/2” gap typically catches construction debris and dirt when the floor is swept, leaving other unwanted materials (to absorb moisture and potentially serve as a food source for mold) requiring contractors to come back and vacuum or scrape and vacuum the gap before proceeding with installation of the finish flooring.

Even when the wall board is installed correctly, and the site is thoroughly cleaned before installation of flooring materials, the rubber base (which is commonly used on all but residential construction) no longer has support behind it at the bottom and is quickly turned under either by foot traffic or cleaning equipment creating an unsightly condition.

OUR SOLUTION

Waterguard is a PVC extrusion made in four foot lengths which is easily slipped onto the gypsum wall board before being installed.  No additional screws, glue, or caulk are required.  The contractor simply slips a strip of Waterguard onto the bottom edge of the gypsum drywall, stands it up on end and screws the wallboard to the studs as they normally would.

Waterguard supports the weight of the wallboard and holds it exactly ½” above the floor level for a clean and consistent application.

Waterguard comes in four foot lengths and is easily cut using a hacksaw or the same utility knife used for cutting and shaping the wallboard so no other tools are required.

After flooring is installed, Waterguard maintains the thickness of the wall providing support for the finish base preventing it from ever being turned under.

Waterguard is a lightweight, low cost way to ensure that gypsum drywall stays dry and mold free.

Waterguard comes in 1/2” and 5/8” thicknesses to accommodate any thickness of wallboard.

Waterguard also comes in multiple heights including 1/2”, 1 3/4”, and 3 1/2” to further protect walls against damage caused by minor flooding.

    PART 3 - EXECUTION

    3.01 EXAMINATION

    A.    Examine areas and conditions in which the moisture guard will be installed.

            1.     Complete all framing operations in the applicable area before beginning installation of moisture guard.

            2.     Review other materials interacting with moisture guard including wallboard materials, wall panel and wainscot systems, door frame assemblies, finish base materials, etc.

            3.     Verify location of any Fire-Rated walls--only ½” tall Waterguard is approved for this condition.

    B.    Floor surface shall be dry and free from dirt, grease, and loose materials.

    3.02 PREPARATION

    A.    General: Prior to installation, clean floor surface to remove dust, debris, and loose particles.

    B.    Mock-ups: Prepare mock-up of outside corner condition including: wallboard, Waterguard, corner bead, and finished base material ensuring clean acceptable fit and finish at corner between finished wall and base.

    C.    Mock-ups: Prepare mock-up of wall to door frame condition including: wallboard, Waterguard, door frame, and finished base material ensuring clean acceptable fit and finish at door frame.

    3.03 INSTALLATION

    A.    Place opened carton of approved Waterguard in staging area near point of installation beside drywall stack/dolly.

    B.    With Gypsum drywall sheets placed flat on stack or standing on drywall dolly; remove paper shipping tape joining ends of drywall panels and slide the top panel (with face up or out) such that the lower edge (edge to be placed against the floor) protrudes 3-4” from the remaining panels.

    C.    Hold one 4’ section of Waterguard with hands placed approximately 12” from each end with open section facing away from you and short leg up against thumbs (see figure 1).  Note: If a narrower section of drywall is being installed, cut Waterguard to length now using a utility knife or hacksaw.

    D.    Position Waterguard perpendicular to finish face of drywall panel with the upper face of the long leg of Waterguard placed flush against bottom edge of drywall panel and the top edge of the short leg of Waterguard placed against the finish face of the drywall panel (see figure 2).

    E.     Align ends of Waterguard with edges of drywall panel.

    F.     While applying a light and constant pressure towards the drywall panel, rotate the Waterguard strip rolling it around and onto the bottom edge of the drywall panel (see figure 3).  Note: concentrate pressure on the short leg of Waterguard and against drywall so that short leg grips the face of drywall during rotation.

    G.    Tap the lower edge of Waterguard as needed to ensure that it is well seated on the drywall panel.

    H.    Lift and set panel into place ensuring Waterguard is snug against floor track and screw drywall to studs as required (see figure 4).  Note: do NOT lift and rotate panel upwards or walk into place by standing the panel on its’ corner(s) else you will damage the ends of Waterguard.

    I.      At exposed outside corners; take care to cut and lap Waterguard flush with adjacent panels so that corner beads may be extended to floor.

    J.     No additional screws, glue, or caulk are required unless otherwise specified except on 2-Hour fire rated walls--once the wall assembly is constructed, place a bead of caulk (latex, acrylic, silicone, polymer, or similar materials – not necessarily listed “fire caulk”) at floor level against the outer most layer of Waterguard.
