PROTAN VACUUM WARM ROOF SYSTEM ON CONCRETE SUBSTRATE
Protan’s vacuum system is based on the principle of anchoring the membrane by creating negative pressure in the layer between the membrane and the airtight substrate when exposed to wind loading. The negative pressure causes the membrane to be held down against the substrate, and the load is transferred downwards to the underlying supporting structure. The stronger the wind, the better the system works. The Protan vacuum system has been verified and approved by the Sintef Building and Research Institute (TG 2281) as well as the BBA (Agrément Certificate 98/3459).
The Protan Vacuum System provides the following benefits:
- unique solution
- rapid installation
- no fasteners or adhesives
- ideal in harsh climates
CONSTRUCTION STRUCTURE:
- PROTAN SE MEMBRANE
- PROTAN VACUUM SYSTEM
- INSULATION
- VAPOUR CONTROL LAYER
- CONCRETE SUBSTRATE
PROTAN SE MEMBRANE:
- The Protan SE membrane series is a polyester reinforced PVC membrane that is used on exposed roof surfaces. Protan SE membrane can be used on all shapes and combinations of roofs – flat, pitched roofs and curved.
- The membrane is made of softened PVC and has polyester knitted reinforcement. Protan SE membrane contains stabilizers that allow the produce to withstand high and low temperatures, and the products are UV and flame retardant.
- The products are highly tear-resistant, which is particularly important for roofs exposed to wind. Protan SE membrane, which remains flexible in cold temperatures, is the easiest product to install in harsh temperatures, which is an advantage in Nordic climates.
- The Protan membrane products feature a unique non-slip surface as standard that provides an aesthetically pleasing surface. Compared with materials without a non-slip surface, this represents a significant safety factor when walking on the roof particularly in wet weather during installation and regular maintenance.
- Durability of in excess of 30 years.
- The membrane is welded together using hot air.
- Low carbon footprint.
SYSTEM INSTALLATION METHOD:
- Protan Vacuum Roof System guarantees rapid installation and a speedy building process. The solution has very few joints and is a perfect match for projects with strict air tightness requirements, such as passive houses. Our vacuum roofing system is also ideal for buildings with high humidity, such as swimming pools, breweries, etc. If moisture is trapped in the roof structure, the vacuum system helps to vent it.
- No fasteners need to be used on the roof surface, so the vapour control layer is not punctured. The membrane is laid in 2 or 4 metre widths,
then air sealed against the parapet and around any penetrations.
- Protan vacuum vents are strategically installed along the perimeters of the roof as determined by a design layout from Protan.

INSULATION:
Various types of insulation can be used in combination with Protan membranes and can be flat insulation or sloped insulation. The material type and design will depend on the building design, fire classification and local regulation requirements. Please consult Protan for specific requirements for the vacuum roof system.
- Mineral wool (MW) – can be glass or stone type
- Polyisocyanurate (PIR) - foil faced
- Combination EPS-MW
VAPOUR CONTROL LAYER:
- Polyethylene - the concrete substrate must be airtight and load bearing.
- Bitumen - must be airtight and load bearing.
CONCRETE SUBSTRATE:
- Structural concrete as either precast elements or reinforced cast in-situ.
